Professional Highlights

Authored and executed the strategic plan for the start-up of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and grew the company to rank as the second largest Alzheimer’s organization in the nation.

Created the AFA concept, built the product/service offerings, and drove revenues through a series of well-targeted, high-impact business ventures, marketing, sales, strategic alliance building and relationship initiatives.

Crafted public policy for the organization and dementia community in general, and engaged in extensive advocacy efforts at the state and federal legislative levels and the White House for care initiatives and government appropriations. Results included inclusion in healthcare reform of AFA-suggested language related to cognitive detection.

Created, developed and executed groundbreaking branches within AFA, including a membership association and training/qualification program for dementia care professionals; a division to educate and engage teens; and a set of national standards for excellence in care for dementia care settings.

Conceived of and directed numerous marketing campaigns and high profile events promoting AFA and highlighting Alzheimer’s disease, including the nation’s first Telly Award winning telethon—“Together for Care”—in 2010, a celebrity-packed event to educate, entertain and engage the public that aired on NBC in 16 major markets and was hosted by Al Roker of The Today Show.

Conceived of and directed National Memory Screening Day and National Commemorative Candle Lighting, first introduced in 2003 and held annually, that involve thousands of sites each year; and the nation’s first grand-scale dementia-related quilt, the AFA Quilt to Remember.

Developed a healthy aging initiative, which includes an extensive alzprevention.org Web site and engagement of top experts to sit on AFA’s Prevention Advisory Board.

Oversaw the development of “Memory Matters,” a groundbreaking report highlighting the safety and efficacy of memory screenings and calling for a national screening policy.

Achieved recognition for AFA as the “voice of care” and personal recognition as a leader in the Alzheimer’s industry, resulting in Congressional testimony, keynote addresses and other public speaking engagements; and high media profile, myriad interviews and appearances in local, regional and national media, including The Today Show, The Early Show, Fox News National, C-SPAN, Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, O: The Oprah Magazine, CBS Radio and CNN Radio.

Spearheaded the development of innovative information sources and points of contact for caregivers, including the nation’s first magazine specifically for dementia caregivers, a network of interactive Web sites including one with Skype and chat access to social workers, a unique teleconferencing service, e-newsletters and local AFA resource centers.

Appointed to National Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care and Services as established by the National Alzheimer’s Project Act. The Act creates the National Alzheimer’s Project, which will coordinate government efforts to prevent and treat the disease as well as create a national strategy for defeating Alzheimer’s disease. Responsible for contributing over one third of the content regarding clinical care and long term support services in the final released plan.

Coordinated the start up of multiple housing and service providing programs: two transitional residences, one outreach program, a health care facility for men with AIDS, and dental office for the homeless.

Assisted in securing substantial government grants totaling over $100M and other funding to enhance service offerings.

Directed the establishment of a multi-million dollar residence for mature adults in the Bronx, NY
